Valentines Day USO Show
February 14th, the UAW Local 2069 Veterans
Committee of Dublin, Virginia had the honor and privilege to help the
Salem Veterans Hospital kick off the National Week of Salute. Across
the nation during this week special emphasis is placed on hospitalized
veterans with a wide array of special activities and programming.
This
past Valentines Day was no exception. The committee was very proud to
help highlight the week with sponsorship of a USO Show. With the auditorium
decked in red hearts and cupids, three very lovely ladies from NY City
made up the trio called the Liberty Belles.
The Liberty Belles is a nostalgic 1940s Troupe reminiscent
of the “Andrews Sisters.” These three ladies took the veteran
patients on a sentimental journey, crooning classic hits such as “Boogie
Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,”
“I’ll Be Seeing You,” “God Bless America,”
and “Thanks for the Memory.” The show included time era
costumes, hairstyles and dance numbers. The ladies interacted with the
veteran audience openly and sincerely. Many of the patients blushed
and were delighted as the red smudges of lipstick were left on their
faces.
Prior
to the show, the ladies spent time in some of the worst stricken wards
to spread some genuine care and joy among the many veteran patients
who were too disabled to attend. The smiles they made that day were
priceless and worth all efforts. Check out www.uso.org to learn more
about the USO.
